Bereavement leave is time off for an employee when a death occurs in his/her family. Companies that provide bereavement leave generally offer anywhere from one to five days of paid leave. Some companies offer additional unpaid leave depending on the circumstances, if the travel distance is great or an employee is designated the executor of the estate. You determine if time off is granted, how much time off is granted and if the time off is paid, unpaid or a combination of both.
