By 2014, each state (or, if the state did not do so, the federal government) was required to establish one or more Exchanges (“Health Insurance Marketplaces”) through which small employers and individuals can buy health insurance.
Generally, U.S. residents (other than incarcerated individuals) are able to purchase individual health insurance through the exchange in the state in which they reside if their state developed its own Exchange, or though the federal government’s Exchange.
