The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, as amended by the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act (together the Act or ACA), was signed into law by President Obama in 2010. The ACA was designed to make major expansions to health care coverage for U.S. citizens and legal residents. The ACA mandates that most citizens and legal residents obtain health care coverage.
