Alternative workweek scheduling is a feature unique to California. It allows nonexempt employees to work more than eight hours per day without requiring daily overtime payment. Such a schedule can be implemented after a vote of all employees in a work unit following proper disclosure and procedures set forth in law and the Industrial Welfare Commission (IWC) Wage Orders. Safeguards are provided for employees in the affected work unit who cannot or will not work the alternative workweek schedule.
