Employee Handbook FAQs

Can I import handbooks created prior to 2005 into the 2005-2011 Handbook software?

No, importing early version handbooks cannot be accomplished due to a change in database structure. The only way to bring old handbooks into the present system is by cutting and pasting each policy into a like policy in the new software.

Can I cut and paste information from our existing (non-CalChamber) handbook into our new handbook?

Yes, cutting and pasting is allowed with the following provisions:
  • Data must be saved in rich text format (.rtf) prior to cutting and pasting.
  • Data must be in "normal" style.
  • Data should not contain odd fonts; this causes problems with table of contents generation and printing.
  • Data to be cut and paste into tables should be tested by generating a print preview after pasting to insure compatibility with the software publishing function — before proceeding to work on your handbook.

Will Employee Handbook software run on Windows Vista and Windows 7?

Yes, all versions 2008.00.01 and later are fully compliant with Windows Vista and Windows 7. The 2007.00.08 and 2008.00.00 versions will both run on Vista, but only with administrator accounts.

I used the wizard to create my handbook. Where did it go?

Your handbook will live in the lower left window of the application. If you have created several handbooks, the name of the current handbook is displayed on the bar between the upper and lower left windows on your screen.

After creating my handbook using the wizard, my handbook has several empty sections. What did I do wrong?

Nothing; using the wizard to create your handbook results in a handbook that contains only the policies necessary to produce a legal handbook based on your company’s employee level, benefits package and operating requirements. To complete your handbook, select optional or recommended policies from each of the available policies sections. Simply drag and drop the desired policies from the available policies section to the same folder in your handbook.

Will the 2011 version of Employee Handbook writer run on older versions of Windows?

No, the 2007 and later versions of Employee Handbook writer will not run on Windows 98, Windows  NT or Windows  ME. These versions of the software are fully compliant with Windows  2000, Windows  XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

I created my handbook using the wizard. When I attempt to open my handbook and customize it to my company, I cannot modify any of the text. My screen is showing that the program is in read-only mode. What is wrong with the application?

Nothing is wrong with the application. The application will show in read-only mode at all times while it is displaying information not contained in your handbook. To open your handbook to edit, simply open any policy from within your handbook (lower left widow). Your handbook is now in editing mode and you can edit the policy you have open to suit your company’s needs.

Can I edit a published handbook with my own word processing software?

We do not recommend editing any published handbook file outside the application. Minor editing for cosmetic purposes can be done outside the application using any word processor that recognizes rich text format files, but these changes will not be reflected in your saved handbook within the application. Remember that, although most of the time this does not cause a problem with the software, it is best to edit within the software. Also be aware that if all editing is accomplished using the software editor, the next time you are ready to update or revise your handbook, it will be up-to-date and ready for editing.
