Chamber Presents California Economic Forum

(October 17, 2003) Today is the last day to register for next week’s California Economic Forum, which brings together leaders from business, government and the academic community to focus on the future of California’s economy.

The event is presented by the California Chamber of Commerce, and its non-profit affiliate, the California Foundation for Commerce and Education, and will be held on Thursday, October 23, and Friday, October 24, 2003 at the Hayes Mansion Conference Center in San Jose, California.

“Business, government and the academic community, working together, can revitalize our economy,” said Fred Main, President of the California Foundation for Commerce and Education.  “By bringing these three groups together to the California Economic Forum, we hope to focus each on the key steps that can be taken to rebuild our jobs climate.”

The California economy, once the dynamic force driving the world’s seventh largest economy and the envy of other states and nations, has fallen on difficult times since 2000; The result has been economic difficulties, including bankruptcy for many companies, job cutbacks affecting thousands of workers and reduced tax revenues for the state government.

The Forum will serve as a gathering of senior executives from business, government and academia, hearing presentations by business leaders, government officials, distinguished economists and others, discussing the factors which will influence the state’s economy over the next decade and the actions which can be taken by all three groups to deal with those factors and rebuild the economy.

The Forum will have several venues to present this information. There will be three general sessions, luncheons on both Thursday and Friday and a major dinner on Thursday evening, at which well-known speakers will offer their perspectives. On Friday morning, following breakfast, there will be a panel of distinguished economists presenting their views and predictions about the world, national and state economies. On Thursday afternoon, after the first luncheon, there will be three sessions on the following topics: The Next Silicon Valley, the California Regional Economies Project, and Transportation Challenges and Solutions. In addition, there will be time for attendees to share their own ideas and suggestions.

  • Mr. Bruce G. Willison, Dean, The Anderson School at UCLA
  • Mr. Jack Kyser, Chief Economist, Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation
