ADA Reform

Overview

The number of persons with one or more disabilities in the United States is growing. The recent closure of Basketball Town, a popular athletic center that was the site of many activities and events for youth in the Northern California community of Rancho Cordova, has again sparked controversy about the appropriate role of lawsuits under disability access laws.

The CalChamber believes that focusing on the areas of consensus is key to achieving a comprehensive set of legislative reforms that address mutual areas of concern.

The CalChamber has established the Advancing Disability Access Coalition for businesses and members of the community who wish to support statewide efforts to achieve better compliance with access laws with less litigation.

To join this coalition, contact Cathy Mesch at (916) 444-6670 or put "ADA coalition" in the additional comments box in this online form. Your information will be kept confidential and used only to communicate with you.

Goal

Support comprehensive reforms to state disability laws that encourage and facilitate greater compliance by businesses with disability access laws; encourage resolution of access violations without use of litigation; and seek to reduce abusive and unwarranted demands for money and lawsuits under disability laws that seek to extract monetary settlements rather than improve access.
