The
California Chamber of Commerce and small business lobbying groups are
sponsoring flexible hours legislation.
The bill by Republican
Assemblyman John Benoit would allow businesses with 25 or fewer employees,
not covered by collective bargaining, to offer four ten hour days per week
or other schedule agreeable to both.
Assemblyman John Benoit said,
"Anything over eight hours, on any given day in California and three other
states, is mandatory overtime. This would allow flexibility for small
businesses to go to ten hours without overtime."
Another bill by
Assemblywoman Fiona Ma would require companies with more than 10 employees
to provide 9 paid sick days per year.
Those with 10 or fewer
workers to grant five paid sick days per year.
The cities of San
Francisco and Washington D.C. have similar ordinances.
Business
groups that favor flexible hours oppose mandated paid sick days.
